Vale Progress in Aberdeenshire Cup

Deveronvale battled to victory against a stubborn Hermes side in this evening’s first round match in the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup at Lochside Park, Aberdeen.

Looking to bounce back from defeat against Fraserburgh at the weekend, Vale started the first half on the front foot, despite clear-cut chances being hard to find. Recent signing Horace “H” Ormsby was a driving force on the right of midfield and was unfortunate not to open the scoring after a goalmouth scramble. Captain Harry Noble fired in some excellent crosses into the Hermes box and Aaron Hamilton was unfortunate not to find the net with a header from close-range, as was Cameron Angus.

Into the second half, Vale keeper Sean McIntosh continued his excellent form from the weekend by denying a Hermes attacker when clean through on goal, before Hermes took the lead after a set-piece found an attacker a couple of yards out, not long after Dane Ballard had a goal chalked off as it brushed off Michael Watson on the goal-line.

Vale pressed for an equaliser and came close on a few occasions, with the enterprising wing play of Jay Goldie seeing a few chances fall to the Vale forward-line, but their efforts were rewarded when substitute Toni Jam finished well after the ball rebounded to him.

The game finished 1-1, meaning we went straight to penalties. Dane got off us off to a great start by firing past the Hermes keeper and the ball also found the net from the boot of Innes Mckay, with Hermes also converting their first two pens. Max Stewart’s effort rebounded off the crossbar but Sean was on hand to deny the Hermes taker straight afterwards, keeping the score at 2-2 after three pens each. Michael Watson and Harry Noble both found the net, as did the Hermes players, meaning it was sudden-death. Robbie Allan kept his cool and sent the keeper the other way, meaning the Hermes player had to score to keep the shootout alive. His penalty went high into the night-sky, giving Vale a 5-4 victory.

We progress to face Formartine United away from home in the Quarter-Final, with the tie to be played next month.
