The Season So Far by Jim Mair

With just over a third of the SHFL season gone, results for the Club have picked up after a difficult set of opening fixtures. Four league wins in a row and twelve welcome points adds to the four picked up in the first eight league matches. So, after twelve matches we have sixteen points compared with fifteen last season and thirteen the season before. In fact, sixteen is our best points total from twelve games since Season 2013-2014 when we picked up twenty-one.

Amongst those four consecutive wins we were very pleased that Steve Dolan got us our first win at Mosset Park, Forres for 15 years. We last won in the league at Forres on Saturday 25th September 2004 when Gregg Carroll was in charge. The margin that day was 4-0 with Vale scorers being Mike Mackenzie, Jamie Watt, Mark Smith and Grant Noble on the day before his 17th birthday.

We now have a sequence of three home games at Princess Royal Park starting with our Aberdeenshire Shield tie this coming Wednesday against Formartine United, followed on Saturday 2nd November with a SHFL game against Keith and Saturday 9th November against Fraserburgh. Keith remain one point above Vale in the SHFL, but Vale have two games in hand. Whilst Vale’s morale will be high after the Forres match so will Keith’s having beaten Strathspey Thistle 7-1 on Saturday at Kynoch Park.

Saturday’s goal scorers Robert Scott and Colin Charlesworth are the leading goal scorers this season with 6 and 5 respectively. Hopefully they can add to their tallies this coming week. Robert is up to 35 goals for Vale and Coco is on 21.

Finally, next Sunday we play against St Johnstone at PRP in the second round of the Scottish Youth Cup with a kick-off at 2pm. Our young guys have been doing really well this season so please make the effort to come along and cheer them on next Sunday.
