Following today’s Scottish Cup preliminary rounds draw at Hampden Park, we have been picked to host Camelon Juniors Football Club at Princess Royal Park in the second preliminary round, with the tie scheduled to be played on Saturday 12th December 2020.
Camelon Juniors, also known as “The Mariners”, were founded in 1920 and play in the East of Scotland Premier Division, currently sitting in 8th place with three victories from their opening six fixtures, with striker Mark Stowe leading the club’s scoring charts with five goals.
The Camelon team has been led since 2016 by manager Gordon Herd, a former Dumbarton striker. Under his management, Camelon won the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners’ Shield in 2018/19 and the Alex Jack Cup in the same season. One of the club’s highlights in its 100-year history was their success in the Scottish Junior Cup in 1994/95, where they beat Whitburn 2-0 at Motherwell’s Fir Park stadium.
The club provided several players to Rangers over the years, including Jerry Dawson and Archie Macaulay, who both went on to become full Scotland internationals with Macaulay going on to play for West Ham United and Arsenal. Max Murray also arrived at Ibrox from Camelon via Queen's Park, and scored Rangers first ever goal in European competition against OGC Nice in 1956. Notable ex-Camelon players in more recent times include former Chelsea and Falkirk winger Kevin McAllister and current Hibernian boss Jack Ross.
After winning the Lothian District League Division One in 2005–06, the club played in the top tier of the East Region for twelve seasons until their move to the senior pyramid. Camelon was one of many junior clubs that moved to the senior East of Scotland Football League during 2018.
We look forward to welcoming Camelon Juniors Football Club (and hopefully our Vale fans to cheer the boys on!) to Princess Royal Park in December for what promises to be an exciting Scottish Cup tie. Should we progress from that tie, we will enter the first round proper, due to be played on Boxing Day, 26th December 2020.
