A disappointing return to competitive football at PRP on Tuesday night with a 2-1 defeat by Dyce Juniors in the Aberdeenshire Cup. Dyce’s match sharpness from their recent Junior “friendlies” showed in the first half and they went ahead through former SHFL striker Nick Gray after 13 minutes. The striker scored a second from the penalty spot after 43 minutes after a tackle in the box by Vale captain Ross Aitken was very harshly judged to have been a foul.
Vale showed more in the second period but were unable to really trouble the Dyce keeper until later in the half. Scott Dunn had a strong penalty shout midway through the second half, but his appeals were waived away by referee Liam Duncan. Not long after the striker had a great chance when the keeper came off his line, but his lob went wide of the left-hand post. The keeper offered Scott another very similar chance a few minutes later which the Vale striker took well.
Vale brought on Dane Ballard, Sam Robertson and Max Stewart as substitutes in the second half but were unable to put sufficient pressure on Dyce to alter the result.
Vale are at home to Brora Rangers in the first game of the SHFL on Saturday 28th November and will need to play with more intensity to challenge the reigning SHFL champions. That game will, unfortunately, be another closed doors affair.
Vale: Still, Gauld, Hamilton, Adams, H. Noble, R. Allan, G. Noble, Aitken, Farquhar, Dunn, Scott. Subs: B. Allan, Ballard, Blanchard, Munro, Robertson, Stewart
