Which years did you play for Deveronvale?

1957 - 1967.

Who signed you for the Vale and what attracted you to sign for the club ?

Sandy Barclay signed me. There were mostly young players at the club at the time, and they were keen to improve their image. Everyone made me feel so welcome at Deveronvale that I was delighted to lend my experience to help them achieve their goals.

What are your fondest memories of playing for Vale ?

I was fortunate in my time at Deveronvale to have the total commitment of the players and officials. Soccer is not an individual game and success only comes from 100% effort by all involved with the club, both on and off the field. We could not have achieved anything without it .

What is the most memorable game you played in for Vale ?

Beating Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup 1st Round at Banff on 28th January 1961. Albion were pushing for promotion to the Scottish First Division and were regarded as firm favourites. We had nothing to fear, and won the tie 1-0 thanks to a goal from George Christie. Our team was - Morrison, Garden, Cormack, Alastair, W. Smith, V. Smith, Murray, Beattie, Pirie, Hay, Christie.

8. Who were the characters at the club ?

Sandy Barclay, 'Datums' Cormack, Gordon Urquhart, Norman Mitchell, Walter Robertson ( senior )

Who were the best players you played with at the Vale ?

Jack Allister, George Christie, Brian Third, Reg Morrison, Charlie Cormack.

And who were the best players you played against ?

I would have to say the entire Aberdeen side we played in the Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie at Pittodrie on 11th February 1961. They were sitting 4th in the First Division, and with 20 minutes to go we were still level 2-2, but two late goals saw the Dons eventually win 4-2. The Aberdeen side was - Ogston, Bennet, Sim, Burns, Coutts, Kinnell, Ewen, Cooke, Hosie, Brownlie, Mulhalt.

What have you done in a football sense since you left the Vale ?

I retired from active football on leaving Banff, and moved to South Africa, where I still live.

What does a normal Saturday afternoon entail for you these days ?

I like to watch sport on tv and play a bit of golf.
