Briefly outline your football career prior to joining Deveronvale.

I left school at fifteen and a half years old and signed a two year deal with Aberdeen FC.

Which year(s) did you play for Deveronvale? Who signed you for the club, and what attracted you to join ?

I signed for the Vale in the summer of 1989 by Billy Anderson and George Yule. I had two main reasons for joining the Vale. Firstly, the club came highly recommended by Rob McBeath and Andy Beattie. And secondly, because George Yule promised he would get me and Stuart MacIntosh good jobs. ( George, if you’re reading this….I’m still waiting for that job !!! )

What are your fondest memories of your time with the club?

I always have fond memories of away trips to Ross County and all the Inverness clubs mostly. We always played well on the park, and off it as well ! Colin Ewen always got stick for not drinking as he was studying at the time, but he got the last laugh, as he is now a director of one of the major banks !

What is the most memorable game(s) you played in for Vale, and why?

The most memorable game was a 3-0 win at Cove Rangers in the Aberdeenshire Cup in February 1990. Neilly Mo scored two and Chubber got the other. Cove were expected to win easily, and we played them off the park that day. I remember Gary ‘Painter’ Morrison making a dramatic goal-line clearance at a crucial stage in the game. Our fans gave him a big cheer, and Painter responded by taking a bow, and blowing kisses to everyone. He thought he was Franz Beckenbauer that day ! It was always good to get one over on the Aberdeen side, and I remember we had some party in the town that night !

Who were the characters at the club ?

There were far too many characters to mention really, but here are a few. Gary ‘Painter’ Morrison - always up to no good ! Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Taylor – last seen on Mastermind ! Alec Cormack – I was sure he was the Vale’s first foreign signing, as I couldn’t understand a word he said ! DJ Buller ( aka Jimmy Barrie ) once asked me to look after the discs while he slipped out to the toilet at the Saints Nightclub. I decided I was a better DJ, and swiftly cut the music, hitting the crowd with a rendition of ‘I am the Music Man !’ Next thing I knew, I was being thrown out, head first, by the bouncers !

Who were the best players you played with at the Vale and why?

Neil Morrison was a great goalscorer Rob McBeath had a big heart Donald Buchanan had big hair !!! Stuart MacIntosh – great skills, bad hamstrings !!!

And who were the best players you played against, and why?

The best players I played against included Wilson Robertson at Inverness Caley – he was just so fast ! And I must also mention the hugely talented Neil Burke who was a great player ( and my director at work ! )

What have you done in a football sense since you left the Vale ?

I went on to play for several clubs – Keith, Burnley, Sunnybank, Turriff United, Inverurie Locos, and last but not least, Formartine United.

What does a normal Saturday afternoon entail for you these days ?

These days I am a member of Newmachar Golf Club, and spend as much time as possible there
