Fort & Vale fought out a typical end of season tussle at sunny Claggan Park which was about as exciting and uneventful as the Jordan-Peter Andre love affair saga, in a match marred by misplaced passes and over-zealous refereeing.
Strikers Mike McKenzie and Jamie Watt bagged a goal a-piece to seal Vale's victory but if the home side had converted one of their many early chances in the first period the outcome of this meaningless game could so easily have been different.
Vale travelled to the west coast looking to keep the momentum going, which had seen them pick up four points from their last two games but were still without the suspended Robbie Brown who it has to be said has been a major loss to the Banff side's midfield since starting his five game suspension.
Darren McAllister made a welcome return to Vale's line-up albeit in an unfamiliar right-back position, replacing Stuart Gray who had limped off last Saturday but who did make the bench.
A lovely spring day in Fort William welcomed the players onto the lush looking surface with the home side dawning an unfamiliar blue & navy kit.

Fort started the game very brightly and Justin Rodgers showed the visiting defence of his intensions early on with a burst through their rearguard only to hit the side netting from a decent position.
Rodgers, on-loan from Inverness Clach, was linking up well with strike partner Macdonald and causing all sorts of problems for the Vale defence and it was the latter who had the next opportunity for the home side but he also failed to hit the target, once allowed through behind the visitor's back-line.
The Lochaber side, currently at the foot of the table were forcing Vale into making continuous errors as they closed down quickly and broke clear again on the quarter hour but this time Ryan Pressley's timely tackle on Rodgers cleared any sight of goal for the speedy hit-man.
A rare Steve Dolan error caused mayhem inside the Vale penalty box but fortunately for the Vale skipper Ryan Pressley was on hand to clear the loose ball which had ran dangerously across the face of Ross Bremner's six-yard box.
Justin Rodgers took advantage of Vale's frailties at the back when he showed them a clean pair of heels but his final ball failed to elude the outstretched hands of Ross Bremner.
Mike McKenzie fired an 18-yarder a foot or so over the bar as Vale at last made progress into the home side's last third.
Jamie Watt was unlucky not to latch onto an Urquhart threaded pass before Barrie Stephen tested Macdonald in the Fort goal with a well-directed effort which was comfortably saved in the end by the young keeper.
Fort were made to pay for their inability to turn their chances into goals when they fell behind eleven minutes from the break.
Barrie Stephen's cross from the right was only partially cleared by the home defence leaving Mike McKENZIE time to pick his spot from 12-yards although the ball did take a major deflection before finding it's way into the bottom corner of the net.
Fort almost equalised immediately when a corner kick was met by the head of centre half Murdoch but unfortunately for the strapping defender the ball landed on the roof of the net.
On the stroke of the half time whistle Vale thought they had scored again when Jamie Watt touched home a Chisholm flick at the back post but the assistant referee's flag was quickly raised against the wee striker for offside.
Half Time: 0-1
Barrie Stephen became the fourth Vale player to be yellow carded by the officious Stuart Logan before the winger tested Macdonald with a well struck 25-yarder, which the keeper dealt with comfortably.
Jamie Watt saw his close range effort squirm wide of the target after it had taken a deflection on its way goalwards and from the resulting corner kick Mike McKenzie forced Macdonald into another save this time low to his left.
Vale were pulling all the strings in a much better second half performance but Mark Chisholm, who worked away tirelessly alongside Terry Kidd and Paul Urquhart, talked his way into the referee's book by disputing a decision against him too strongly for the man in black's liking.
Chisholm then scored what he thought was his twelve of the season, side footing home a McAllister deep cross but he too was thwarted by a raised flag, this time from the opposite side referee's assistant.
Ryan Pressley took a sore one in the face off Justin Rodger's boot but the central defender was able to continue after some treatment on the sidelines.
Barrie Stephen's attempted lob from distance lacked the accuracy to beat the back-peddling Macdonald before Bremner was called on for the first time after the re-start to claw away a dangerous curling corner which could so easily have sneak in under the cross-bar.
Fort's hopes of grabbing an equaliser well all but dashed minutes later when Vale completed the scoring and sealed the points.
Steve Dolan cleverly intercepted a slack pass out of the home defence before dashing down his customary left flank. The ball in from the Vale captain was inch perfect allowing Jamie WATT the simplest of volleys from 8-yards although the Fort number one was a little unfortunate not to get a stronger hand to prevent the ball ending up in the back of the net.
Bamber fired inches wide and then Gannon's powerful header was expertly saved low to his right by Ross Bremner as Vale were given a strong reminder that Fort were still in the game, even at two-nil.
Gannon then tried his luck with a curling 25-yard effort which Bremner seemed to have covered although it certainly wasn't far away from his right-hand post and at the other end Macdonald stood up well to deny Mike McKenzie his second of the afternoon when he blocked Mike's power-driver to safety from close range.
Gordon Farmer & Stuart Gray replaced Terry Kidd and Darren McAllister respectively as the game entered the final few minutes but no more opportunities were to follow and Vale went on to pick up another three points and complete the league double over the Lochaber side.
Full Time: 0-2
Gregg Carrol had little to say after the match although was happy enough with another three points. "It wasn't the most convincing performance from the boys especially in the first half hour but once we got our passing game going we looked quite comfortable. A clean sheet and three points is what we would have taken before the game so I've got to be reasonably happy".
"The bookings we picked up today were the only disappointing aspect of the match especially after stressing to the lads about making unnecessary comments to officials but apart from that we're fairly pleased to come away with another victory in what is never an easy fixture bar perhaps last season when we scored ten without reply" added Carrol.
