MISSED CHANCES COST VALE AS KEITH PROGRESS TO FINAL

Deveronvale 0:2 Keith
Smith 40
Donaldson 89
Holders Deveronvale were knocked out of the Qualifying Cup at the semi-final stage on Saturday when they were ousted by local rivals Keith at a windy Princess Royal Park.
The Banff side have only themselves to blame as they missed a host of chances during the first half-hour of the match and were then caught by a breakaway sucker punch by the Kynoch Park side just before the break.
The home side may look to the controversial moment of the match when Bryan Dlugonski was sent off for holding back ex-Vale striker, Graeme Cadger in the penalty area but the visitors also were reduced to ten men midway through the second half when Kerr Gibson was also red carded for his second booking of the game.
Vale skipper Scott Anderson elected to play with the stiff breeze at their backs for the first forty-five and once the nerves had settled the homeside took the game to their opponents with wave after wave of attack.
Brown saw his long range effort blocked before Mike McKenzie's dipping shot bounced off the underside of the cross bar with the ball eventually being scrambled clear by the visiting defence. Cadger and Smith had a couple of gilt-edge chances before Chisholm somehow knocked Murray's lay-off over the top from 6 or 7 yards. Brown skimmed the cross bar with another fierce drive from distance but again failing to force Pirie into any kind of save.
At the other end Speirs had to look sharp to save from Still as Keith threatened from a set piece. McAllister was next to try his luck but he too was inches to high to trouble Ivor Pirie in the Keith goal. Pirie was then relieved to see McKenzie's well-hit drive go inches over before Dolan hit the side netting following a short corner.
The visitors shocked the homeside when they took an undeserved lead with only six minutes of the first half remaining. Reid clipped a hopeful ball over the Vale back-four and Smith showed Dlugonski a 'clean pair of heals' to run on and calmly side-foot the ball past Speirs from 12 yards.
Worst was to follow minutes later for the Vale centre-half when he was adjudged to have held back Cadger as they both chased a loose ball into the penalty area. Referee MacDonald immediately pointed to the spot before showing the Vale number five the red card.
Still stepped up to take the kick firing the ball high to Speir's right but the keeper brilliantly palmed the ball away to keep his side in the game.
Chisholm might have snatched a vital goal for the Banffers on the stroke of half time but he headed over the top and then Dolan was very unlucky to see his low drive fall just the wrong side of the far stick with Pirie scrambling across his goal.

Half Time:-0-1

Gregg Carrol made no changes to his personnel at the interval deciding instead to pull Matty Kinghorn into central defence to partner Scott Anderson.
Levi Stephen sent a swerving shot just wide as Vale tried their utmost to get back into the match. The driving rain and strengthening wind made it even harder for the ten men and at times the home side were struggling to get out of their own half. Smith fired a free kick just wide of Speir's post and as Vale broke upfield referee MacDonald produced the second red card of the afternoon. Gibson, who had just been booked minutes earlier was shown his second yellow of the match for taking the legs from Murray as the striker wriggled clear.
The decision gave Vale a real lift and Brown fizzed a drive inches over and then McKenzie saw his effort deflected for a corner. McKenzie headed over from yet another corner as Vale tried desperately to get the equaliser their perseverance deserved. Pirie saved at point blank range from Murray as the ball bobbled about in the Keith penalty box.
However it wasn't meant to be for Gregg Carrol's men and substitute Donaldson put the issue beyond any doubt when he punished a mistake by Anderson by sending a high curling shot over the despairing Fraser Speirs and into the net with only two minutes, of the ninety, remaining on the clock.

Full Time:-0-2

Vale boss Gregg Carrol said after the match, "We had more chances than our opponents but just couldn't convert them. Perhaps it just wasn't meant to be".
