Gregg Carrol's men put on another great home performance against undefeated
Clachnacuddin and in the process closed the gap on their opponents, at the
top of the table, to one point.
Jamie Watt was the toast of the "Valley Crew" with another hat-trick taking
his goal tally for the season to 20.
Vale's squad was stretched to the bone due to the suspension of Robbie Brown,
coupled with the injuries to Mark Chisholm, Mark Smith and Franny More.
The starting lie-up was unchanged from Saturday's visit to Brora with Ian
Murray and Paul Urquhart swapped places in the midfield, Murray taking up a
more central role and Vale's defence adjusting to compensate with their
visitors formation.
Perfect playing conditions saw a calm night with a greasy surface, a complete
contrast to the previous Saturday in Sutherland.
McCraw tested Thompson with a near post flick which the keeper held on his
line as Clach threatened from the off. Vale, however took an early lead with
their first chance of the game. McKenzie completely out-foxed two defenders
on the right wing and flicked an excellent cross with the outside of his boot
to the unmarked WATT on the penalty spot. Rae did well to reach the striker's
stooped header but couldn't prevent the ball trickling over the line,
confirmed as a goal by the far-side linesman.
Murray created space for himself at the edge of the area but his weaker
left-foot shot carried no threat to the waiting Rae. Watt then got free down
the left flank and fired in a great low cross, between keeper and defence,
but the in-rushing Urquhart was a fraction of a second late on arriving to
meet the tempting ball. Montgomery's fiercely hit 30 yard drive was a foot
over with Rae well beaten in the Clach goal. Allan did well to get his head
to the ball as McAllister tried to unleash Watt through on goal. Mike
McKenzie almost doubled Vale's advantage with a close range effort, which
cannoned back off Rae before the home-side stretched their lead. McAllister
swung over a waist-high cross from the right which the waiting Jamie WATT met
in mid-air to fire past the helpless Rae from 15 yards.
Half Time:2-0
Dolan provided a superb low cross in the first minute of the re-start but a
timely foot-in by McLeod foiled the loitering Watt. Following a corner kick,
Watt took a tumble in the penalty area, but referee Campbell waved play on.
Seconds later, as the ball was cleared upfield, play was stopped when the
referee noticed the stand side's flag still raised from the previous
incident. After a lengthy conversation between the two the referee called
play back and awarded the Vale a penalty, seemingly for a push off the ball
on Murray. WATT made his usual immaculate job of executing the spot kick to
complete the scoring.
As the game threatened to boil over three visiting
players were booked before Murray was stretchered off receiving a yellow card
for his troubles. Murray was soon back on the field and seemed to be running
freely. Brennan shaved the Vale crossbar and Polworh came close with a snap
shot but neither called Barry Thompson into action.
Cuish was red carded for a dreadful high tackle on Montgomery with the latter hobbling for the
remainder of the game and must be a doubt for Saturday's home game against
Inverurie Locos. Thompson pulled off the save of the match, parrying
Polworth's close range volley to safety before Ryan Pressley became Vale's
second red card victim in two games, seemingly for kicking-out after the ball
had gone.
