SEASON TO BE CHEERFUL
…Part ‘03

Season Reviews can, and usually are, long lists of fixtures and results, highs and lows. This season Access Reporter Alan F.Masson has put the Championship Winning Season in to verse; we like it and hope you do too.............
2001 we won the Cup- “Aberdeenshire”, at Balmoor
2002 we won THE Cup-“Qualifying”, - Buckie ‘poor’
2003 a Shield this time – The Locos we ‘derail’
But best of all we won the League – “The Champions”, DEVERONVALE !
First game at home on August 3, the Season up and running
We look to take the full three points with pace, and style and cunning
But Lossie they have other plans, and snatch an ‘unjust win’
A sad day for The Valley Crew, NOT how it should’ve ‘bin’
Littlecould the fans have known, they’d watched the ‘last league loss’
That Vale would now go on to show, the others just who’s boss
Gregg reshuffled his losing pack and started to show some tricks
The Shire Cup, away at Cove- we hit the ‘toonsers’ for six
Our first league points 3-1 at Nairn, an easy win; no hurry
A goal from ‘some McKenzie lad, 'oh aye an‘some boy Murray‘
The Shire Cup semi at home midweek, we ‘keep the dream alive’
We storm into the Final when we give Huntly ‘High Five
Back to League and Rothes at Banff, a single goal from "Chiz"
Another 3 points that stay at home, we're really doin' the 'biz
The Shire Cup final 'v' Aberdeen, for Harlaw Park we're bound
But sadly it would prove to be, for Vale, an 'unlucky ground'
Another win, again the league, this time away to Wick
The Vale would seem to travel well, with four goals, the home side,’sick’
We end the month away to Nairn, the Qualifying Cup first round
The referee was ‘comical’ but the 3-2 win was ‘sound’
September took two weeks to start, the score the same as ‘Wick’
‘Awa te Brora’, win 4-0, Ian Murray’s first hatrick
Then Buckie in the Qualifying Cup- the Scottish Cup? Don’t know
Chiz clinches it, we win 2-1, it’s Hampden Here We Go !
A win at Cove, the League this time, 2-1, but simply the best
How could we possibly keep this up, how will we stand the test?
October sees us fail at first, the Qualifying Cup semi we lost
At hometo Keith, no goals we scored, we paid the ultimate cost
The Shire Shield would cheer us up, we soon would lose the pain
Huntly at Banff, we go nap hand, and knock in 5 again
The goals still flowing steady and it’s Forres we defeat 5-0
again, the usual boys, it seems we can’t get beat!
And so to Bellslea Park, The Broch, for me, ‘the match of the season’
The Shire Shield Semi, - 6 goals; 7 pens; Vale win, and that’s the reason
Then off again to a scenic ground at the foot of a Nevis called ‘Ben’
With goals a plenty and Molby hitting six, Vale score the ‘perfect ten’
Broch again, at home this time, the Champions within easy reach
A goal apiece in a 1-1 draw, both settle for one point each
Vale end the month on a happy note, The Shire Shield Final we win
A Molby pen with seconds to go; get the beers in, get the gin!
November it’s away to Clach, a new kit white and blue
The ref saw red wi Dougal and Nige but we still took a point, 2-2
League leaders Locos came to Banff, their train we had to stop
We beat them by 4 goals to 1 and replaced them at ‘the top’
Nairn again and what a fright, at home we’re down by two
But four good goals in the second half is all we had to do!
Next up a trip to Lossie, ‘sweet revenge’ we had in store
Two late Molby goals was ‘all he did’, but we knew that he’d score more
December and it’s Derby day we start at home to Buckie
With 4 goals for, and no reply, it wasn't classed as ‘lucky’
A 3-1 win at Banff ‘v’ Keith, went far to help our cause
We had to keep the pressure on, we had no time to pause
We even squeezed a ‘Friendly’ in, for “Dougan”, what a night!
At 2-0 down we turned it round, beat Caley outta sight
Ok so it was just 4-3, don’t mean to sound precocious
But SUPERVALLEY WERE FANTASTIC, CALEY WERE ATROCIOUS!
Vale ‘froze’ away at Rothes, 2 goals down, fought back and drew
Monty scoring late enough, to cheer the ‘Valley Crew’
The year drew in with a cheerful win, a victory ‘made in heaven’
Wick never got going, and without them knowing, Vale scored a ‘Magnificent Seven’
The New Year came and so did the fans, to fill 3 buses – a wonder!
Strathcathro turned round, Morton were bound, SFA – an absolute blunder!
On Monday night the game was played, Vale’s effort described as ‘plucky’
A 4-3 loss, a classic goal but on the 13th, well, unlucky’
Back home in the league the victory comes, 2-0 and Brora are beaten
February and Buckie steal a late point to leave the Vale fans almost greetin’
A draw against Cove, at home the next week, sees the Aberdeen men state their case
But a 1-0 win in a friendly ‘v’ The Dons, wipes the smiles off the city boys face.
Travelling to Forres is never that easy but Vale took the game at a canter
A 4-2 win with plenty of goals, and action, and obviously ‘banter’
March arrived and hopes were high, the fans were feelin’ fine
Fort William arrived, their hopes were dashed, and Vale were on ‘Cloud Nine’
Defending Champs the next in line as to The Broch Vale go
A win 4-2 the belief was there, these boys just won’t say ‘no’
Officially they’re just 3 more wins, from glory sweet and true
A win 3-0, at home to Clach, is simple, ’that’ll do!’
Locos next with possibilities, ‘endless,’ so it seems
Vale win, and Keith get beat, the answer to our dreams
2-0 up at Harlaw Park, and word comes thru,‘Cove score’
That must be it, we’re Champions now, we needn't do any more!
As Valley fans we should have known we weren't quite out of trouble
Locos score, then Thompson claims, the passback “took a bobble”
We leave the ground pronounced as champs yet people look bemused
Surely we cannot be caught on goal difference! – I’m confused !!
So off to Kynoch Park next week, the Valley Crew in force
The party plan was set go, ‘a victory, but of course !
A Molby goal was all it took to make the fans go wild
A moment that we’ll not forget, man, woman and the child.
“Champions” we sung aloud, could it be really true?
The Vale had won the Highland League, just a pity they played in blue!
The season far from over, League Cup was next to ‘take’
Away to Lossie, first round win, we smash an ‘8 ball break’
Quarter final home ‘v’ Cove, no points but goals, get three
Midweek we win 2-1 to beat the ‘Hoo-doo’ at Huntly
April ends with Vale no fools, Locos beaten by ‘Scotty’
May begins at home in the league, ‘the presentation,’ fans go ‘potty’;
Huntly beat by 2 goals to 1, our league run kept intact
Only lost first league game of the season – and that my friends, is a fact!
Lost the League Cup Final ‘v’ Keith, they were better, we did not fail
‘Cos best of all, we won the league, “THE CHAMPIONS“– DEVERONVALE!
